Active | De-Active (Cavite Leg)

Active | De-Active 2010 kicks off this Saturday (October 9) in Espasyo Siningdikato creatiVEnue to showcase two exciting frontiers of music which are experimental and improvised music. The festival called Active | De-Active: An Inventive Music Festival 2010, is an international music festival, which will tour three Philippine cities – Cavite, Manila and Davao – from October 9 – 16.

The festival will consist of a series of live performances, workshops, presentation of methods and practices, creative collaborations and artist-talks by international and local participating artists, in an effort to present and exchange artistic ideas and musical experiences that will contribute to the appreciation and understanding of these developments in music.

This will provide a platform for informed discussions of the cultural, developmental and educational aspects of improvisation and experimentation in music, and at the same time, present its artistic and technical practices.

The festival is also an attempt to gather a community of experimental musicians, improvisers, new media art practitioners, musicologists, and teachers who can share and exchange knowledge that would benefit the understanding of improvised and experimental music.

The Cavite Leg will happen in Espasyo Siningdikato creatiVEnue, an independent art space located at Block 11 Lot 9 Congressional Road, Bgy. Sta.Fe Dasmariñas, Cavite (near DLSU-Dasmariñas, in front of Dan Phil Hardware), on October 9 (Saturday).

A free workshop on music improvisation from Luo Chao Yun and Sabu Toyozumi at 6pm, and then followed by performances from Luo Chao Yun Music Group + Sabu Toyozumi, Seido, Elemento, Washing Machine and Double Burner.

Luo Chao Yun (Taiwan) - is the only PIPA (traditional Chinese guitar lute) player who plays traditional music to free jazz improvisation and experimental avant-garde in the contemporary music world. She is Taiwan’s famo...us professional Pipa Soloist/improviser, Luo Chao-yun, is a virtuoso performer on the Chinese traditional string instrument----“PIPA”. She received the master's degree in Pipa performance at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Luo Chao-yun has performed recitals, concertos with orchestra, multimedia-performances, improvisation performances, embassy concerts, recording cds, and etc. in Beijing (many times), Malaysia(2 times), Singapore, Portugal, Pakistan, Nepal, Costa Rica (2 times), Italy, USA (3 times), UK (4 times), the Netherlands (3 times), Brazil(2 times), Paraguay, Bulgaria, Japan(2 times), North Cyprus, Turkey, Indonesia(2 times), Philippines(2 times), and etc. She also has master class, workshops, and lectures in these countries, too.

Sabu Toyozumi (Japan) - A drummer of the first generation of free jazz scene in Japan. Born in Yokohama, 1943. In 1970s, he formed a trio with famous bass player Yoshizawa Motoharu and sax player Takagi Mototeru and recorded his first album with the New Direction led by guitarist Takayanagi Masayuki. After that , he collaborated with many outstanding improvisation musicians, such as Kaoru Abe, Derek Bailey, Peter Brötzmann, Han Bennink, and Takehisa Kosugi. Toshiyuki Seido (Japan) - has been a sound artist for more than 20 years and has performed in various local and international exhibits and shows, most recently in Kaida Gallery, Manila with fellow sound artist and collaborator Lirio Salvador to release their multi-media work (also in collaboration with visual artist and sculptor Noell El Farol and photographer Koji Onaka) entitled "ManilaBox", a collection of sounds and images of Manila.

In 2008, he founded the label "New Art Laboratory," which aims to produce sound and performance works in the Philippines.

Elemento - is a multi-disciplinary art collective that is spear-headed by Lirio Salvador, a visual assemblage / sound artist. Salvador creates sound sculptures cum musical instruments out of metal pipes, stainless steel, bicycle parts and other industrial materials. These sound sculptures are being used by the group in their sound art/musical performances and are sometimes seen hanging on display on different museums and art galleries.

Blend:er - is an electronic music producer, analog synth player and field recordingsenthusiast from Cavite, Philippines His music has appeared in Mood Swing Theater Compilation (2004), Atlanta, U.S.A., S.A.B.A.W. Anthology (2006) – the first anthology of sound art, noise, electronic, and experimental music in the Philippines, and in Experimentation in Sound Art Tradition 3 CD Album (2009). He has been invited to various electronic music performances, art galleries and music/sound festivals such as Media Art Manila's Field Trip (Green Papaya Art Projects) and Ear to Eye Festival (Asia-Europe New Media Symposium 09). He has also collaborated, both live performances and studio projects, with artists from E.X.I.S.T., S.A.B.A.W. and Electronica Manila Collective.

Lakbay Lahi - is built on the philosophy that deep satisfaction from sound is something innate...inborn. For the span of 9 months that every human has spent inside the womb of their mother, they have, consciously or unconsciously, been listening to the music of LIFE - wiggling themselves inside the small confines of the placenta as the hearts of their loving mothers continuously beat. Creating a never ending solo concerto of a 'percussionist', stopping the performance would mean death to the 'musician' and/or the 'listener' as well.

Formed in 1999 in Cavite, Lakbay Lahi tries to bring about this innate feeling of oneness between man and music...between soul and sound. ‘Free-form' is practiced on every organic sound art piece. The basic melodies are used as a foundation, but there is always a level of uniqueness between performances. Emotional, psychological and spiritual status of the performers at the very moment of performance contributes to the color and texture of the organic sound art piece.

Washing Machine - is the duo of Stan Castelo and Gilbert Sanchez. The group explores the possibilities of experimental electronic performance and improvisation.

Caliph8 - beat smith, graffiti bomber and soothsayer. A lynch-pin of various groups and ensembles, he's probably the most sought after sound manipulator in the Philippines. His output extends to more than just sniffing aerosol paint and flexing wrists with fat markers–he also creates visuals and projects them while manipulating audio and creates sound collage.

Inconnu Ictu a.k.a Roger Llagas Lopez - is a post-musician,experimental composer,improviser, multi-instrumentalist and visual art enthusiast who resides in the shoe capital of the Philippines. Inconnu Ictu means an unknown man's blow or a stroke. As a sound constructor he explores his interest by using obsolete electronic gadgets, pedal fx boxes, defective rhythm consoles, found objects, d.i.y mic and a circuit bent material. Inconnu Ictu has participated and is affiliated with SABAW and E.X.I.S.T (EXperimentation In Sound art Tradition) sound art collectives, and is a multi-media and explorative art enthusiast.

Tengal - is a Manila-based “multipractic” being actively involved in interactive media, sonic arts, moving image (cinema and beyond), networking cultures, and curatorial and research-based production towards the imminent intersections of art and technology. His work puts the focus on direct experience, risk-taking and personal interaction between artists and audience, and emphasizes the situational potential of live performance, the interplay of various media – sound and image, in particular – and candid exchange between sub-cultural and academic initiatives. In 2005, he founded SABAW Media Art Kitchen – a not-for-profit, artist-run umbrella organization and network platform for all kinds of information and communication carried via modern electronic media art focused specially in the region of South East Asia.

Charles Fournier (Davao) - Primarily a guitarist and a composer in the 90s Manila rock scene, Chuck Fournier explored electronic music before his move to Davao in 2004. He has won an award for his techno-tribal piece featuring synthesizers and traditional ethnic instruments, along with Manobo lyrics entitled "Life's Circle (Gahad To Ko-ontayan)" in the Tugtog World Music Festival in Davao City, sponsored by The Davao Tourism Authority. Fournier continues to stretch his musical boundaries in exploring sound and music.

EXperimentation In Sound art Tradition (E.X.I.S.T.) is proud to present Active | De-Active: An Inventive Music Festival. It is the first international festival to be held in the Philippines that focuses on two exciting frontiers of music — experimental and improvised music. The event is scheduled to take place this coming October at various selected venues in Manila, Cavite and Davao (details soon).






It will consist of a series of live performances, workshops, presentation of methods and practices, creative collaborations and artist-talks by international and local participating artists, in an effort to present and exchange artistic ideas and musical experiences that will contribute to the appreciation and understanding of these developments in new music.
