bedroomLab is dedicated to contemporary electronic, digital and experimental music, as well the diverse range of artistic activities in the context of sound and video culture. bedroomLab presents projects that experiment with new aesthetic parameters and new forms of cooperation, develop possibilities for informational and economic self-determination, and reflect on the role of contemporary music against the backdrop of technological and social transformations. Now more than ever, music emerges as a laboratory for multiform experiments and as an active agent that allows for new cultural techniques to be tested and proffered to the wider world.

Your orbiting visual and sound bedroomlaboratories are charting new ways of audio and video interaction in the Philippines and beyond. We have had a particular interest in creating an open dialogue between the audio and video dimensions, a linkage with a long experimental pedigree.

Mel Araneta's 3rd solo art exhibition and Etniktronika's Industrial Cancer album launch

Undaunted by a recent diagnosis of Severe Lumbar Disc Bulge, Mel Araneta returned to his native town Bacolod for his 3rd solo art exhibit dubbed as “ETNIKTRONIKARANETART”.

His 3rd solo exhibit will open on September 26, 2009 at 6 PM and will run until October 16, 2009 at Namit Namit Pagkaon Kag Taliambong (Resto Gallery), Artkalye, San Agustin Ext., North Drive, Bacolod City.It will coincide with the album launching (Industrial Cancer) of his sound art/circuit-bending group Etniktronika, with sound performances by Inconnu Ictu and Blend:er, who traveled from Marikina and Cavite, respectively, to show support.

Mel Araneta's medical condition commonly known as “slipped disk”, affects his spine and causes him pain and discomfort. He was constrained to leave his day job, and seek refuge and comfort in his art and faith.“At first I was shocked, but I know that God just gave me another trial in my artistic life. I am currently in an ongoing therapy. Art is my life and I will never stop doing this until my last breath. I know God is good all the time.”

Mel Araneta is a painter, sculptor and sound artist who was born on July 12, 1973 in Binalbagan, Negros Occidental. He finished his studies at TUP-VISAYAS in 1995. He is also the founding member of the Etniktronika, a group that employs circuit-bending procedures and ethnic instruments to produce their distinct sound. Many of their instruments are crafted from discarded objects usually found in nearby junk shops. His self-made instrument baptized as the "Uyabon" ( means "girlfriend” in Ilonggo dialect) appears as a half-body mannequin with built-in toy keyboard and tampered circuitry. He professes his gratitude to Lirio Salavador of Elemento for inspiration in circuit-bending and d.i.y. electronic instruments.

Inconnu Ictu a.k.a Roger Llagas Lopez is a post-musician,experimental composer,improviser, multi-instrumentalist and visual art enthusiast who resides in the shoe capital of the Philippines. Inconnu Ictu means an unknown man's blow or a stroke. As a sound constructor he explores his interest by using obsolete electronic gadgets, pedal fx boxes, defective rhythm consoles, found objects, d.i.y mic and a circuit bent material. Inconnu Ictu has participated and is affiliated with SABAW and E.X.I.S.T (EXperimentation In Sound art Tradition) sound art collectives, and is a multi-media and explorative art enthusiast.

Blend:er is an electronic music producer, analog synth player and field recordingsenthusiast from Cavite, Philippines His music has appeared in Mood Swing Theater Compilation (2004), Atlanta, U.S.A., S.A.B.A.W. Anthology (2006) – the first anthology of sound art, noise, electronic, and experimental music in the Philippines, and in Experimentation in Sound Art Tradition 3 CD Album (2009). He has been invited to various electronic music performances, art galleries and music/sound festivals such as Media Art Manila's Field Trip (Green Papaya Art Projects) and Ear to Eye Festival (Asia-Europe New Media Symposium 09). He has also collaborated, both live performances and studio projects, with artists from E.X.I.S.T., S.A.B.A.W. and Electronica Manila Collective.

POKLONG ANADING’S DRUNKEN REVELRY

Around 30 km north of Bandung in Indonesia, there is a popular volcano that looks like a boat from afar. Called Tangkuban Perahu, its name translates to an ‘upturned boat’ and recalls a legend of a beautiful woman who lived in West Java. One day she banished away her son for disobeying her, which caused her deep sadness. To appease her, the gods gave her eternal youth. After many years, her son returned but the two no longer recognize each other. They fell in love and planned to marry, until the mother saw a familiar birthmark on the son’s body. For the marriage to take place, she set two conditions: he must build a dam on the river and construct a large boat to cross it, both before sunrise. The son summoned the help of mythical ogres in order to complete the task. Seeing that they were almost done, the mother commanded her workers to spread red silk cloth all over the east side of the city, to give the impression of daybreak. The son was fooled, and in his frustration, kicked the dam and the unfinished boat, causing a great flood and the emergence of a volcano from the boat’s hull.

As part of his return exhibition from his residency in Bandung last December 2008, Poklong Anading’s latest installation Drunken Revelry fittingly anchors on the boat. The boat is such an elemental figure in the consciousness and history of island people. It is the manifestation of our inherent desire to explore, trade, conquer, and be lost. In Indonesia, as in the Philippines, the way of the sea is so palpable, that it seems as if we each carry a wave within our bodies that pulls in stronger as we draw closer to open water.

During Anading’s two-week stay at Common Room, he had the opportunity to meet and hang out with a community of artists and musicians. Before he left, Anading, together with Ega Lesmana, Sandy Ate, Indra Jenggot and others from Common Room did a sound project, recording the sound of the perahu in a large cauldron filled with water. The perahu is a traditional Javanese handmade tin boat, which can be easily found on the sidewalks and markets of Bandung. The shape is reminiscent of a warship, with gunners on the deck. A flame propels it; inside its hull is a wick. A charmingly crude toy, it makes a clanging rat-tat-tat sound as it crosses the water. Anading used the sound of the perahu as the initial layer, upon which the musicians instinctively responded to, adding their own particular sonority to the mélange. The resulting dissonance can be drowning but at the same time its atonality can be quite harmonious, a typical characteristic of electronic music.

For this year’s exhibition at the Ateneo Art Gallery, Anading did a new video of his friends’ children playing with the perahu he brought back from Bandung. The shot is taken from the top, and shows five colored boats – red, yellow, blue, black, and white – floating in this makeshift pool. The children are no longer seen, only their hands as they reach out for the boats. Tightly cropped, it is focused on the boats as they circle around, trapped in the water. From that angle, it’s almost like a volcano’s crater enclosing a lake.

Anading appropriately installed his video inside the gallery’s stockroom, the core of the space. It is a narrow enclosure within the gallery, where artifacts, files and precious objects lie in wait. The gallery’s lights have been turned off and the only source of light is the video. The room is empty except for the cornucopia of sounds - several layers of recordings of spontaneous jammings and other sound projects that Anading has collected over the years. Apart from the recording in Bandung, Anading incorporated sessions with Manny Migriño, Sam Kiyoumarsi and Gary-Ross Pastrana during the construction of Paul Pfeiffer’s stadium for the 2008 Sydney Biennale at the 18th Avenue compound in Cubao, wherein the artists merged their sound with the sound of building materials and other sounds happening at the time; and the most recent recording with Pow Martinez and Roger Lopez (Inconnu Ictu) at the Ateneo with the children playing with the perahu.

In Anading’s archive of sounds, traces of early experimental, avant-garde strategies and one-off happenings can be found. In an earlier project Visible Darkness, Anading also experimented with sound and the absence of light when he brought a band of blind musicians for a performance in a darkened theater in Intramuros. (NCCA, 2005) In Drunken Revelry, however, it is disentangled from the spectacle of live performance and instead, it is presented as a recording, a documentation, an abstraction of the real event. Its ephemerality is further heightened by the absence of light and objects in the space. Distance is carved out from the layers of sounds, unidentifiable already since they have all merged into one.

With Anading’s works, the social context of the work and the site are usually strong elements. As soon as we enter the gallery, we – the audience - become participants in the gesture, walk-in collaborators in the performance. In Light Suffers Where There Is No Place To Fall From (Finale Art Gallery, SM Megamall, 2007), we are enclosed in the void, the white cube gallery, with only sound and air between us. The sounds and traces of our bodies – the talk, the footsteps, the shuffling, the ruffle of our clothes, our shadows – all converge in this heady brew, this atmosphere, this moment. We packed ourselves in the gallery, and posed for a picture. For the work in Ateneo, as in Intramuros, we huddle in the dark to listen.

Anading’s earlier collaborations have posed the difficulty to bridge distance, and the forced isolation imposed by certain social situations. (Walking Distance with Ringo Bunoan, 1999, and Three Chairs with Chico Beltran and Jose Beduya, 2000) In Drunken Revelry, he uses sound as material, expression, communication, and a way to connect with others. This time, he highlights free play, spontaneity and intuition in human interaction and the ruptures that occur with each encounter. Transcendence is similar to several rounds of drinks, after which we give in to more communal, primal urges. Our dissonant barriers dissolving, like the ice in our glass.

After the WASAK year-ender, Fete de la Wasaque, (the festival that brought us 2-nights of wall shaking acoustic-meets-digital assault stirring acts), SABAW Media Art Kitchen opens this year with a very unique 1-hour "digital fireworks" display of live video art, live electronic music and live radio transmissions!

SABAW is pleased to welcome California-based composer, pianist, electronic musician, instrument-builder, CHRIS BROWN, who creates music for acoustic instruments with interactive electronics, for computer networks, and for improvising ensembles. He will be performing his Transmissions series in collaboration with media artist Tengal and the electronic sound-video performance collective, The Gangan Ensemble.

The "Transmissions" series is an audience interactive, live electronic music performance series about the transmission of culture through the information media of sound and radio. It redefines the relationship of performers and audience to the radio medium, opening audio spaces to unheard voices in diverse communities by emphasizing the ability of both to create both the content and the means of production of radio communication. For this performance, radios in automobiles are primarily going to be used since it provides a more familiar experience and is easily accessible today.

Using the outdoor parking space of Cubao X, Chris Brown and The Gangan Ensemble produce live electronic music, while video artist Tad Ermitano performs live video manipulation alongside the electro-magnetic sound tapestry. We are also pleased to feature the video works of California-based visual artist, Johanna Poethig. The live music is mixed into a stereo channel, which is sent to a low-power FM radio transmitter, assigned to a unique frequency where people in the performance space can tune in.

The audience is encouraged to bring their own cars and park them along the parking strip of Cubao X and turn up their radios to create an expansive sound tapestry. Apart from car radios, they are also encouraged to bring portable radio receivers, especially battery powered boom-boxes, mobile phone radios, and to tune in to the transmission channels while moving around the performance space. The audience is thus made a creative partner in the performance of the music, and the event becomes an interaction between the musicians, audience, and the sounds presented in the transmissions.

Think: Drive-in cinema. The audience can watch the live video projection and performers by either sitting inside or staying outside their cars while listening to the music coming from their car stereos.

According to Brown, "personal radios are electronic musical instruments that we all know how to play: we adjust their loudness and tone-quality to our taste and we move them around in our environments to accompany us in our lives."

ALSO: Before the concert performance in Cubao X on JANUARY 10, there will be two-nights of OPEN STUDIO SESSIONS with Chris Brown and the Gangan Ensemble at Green Papaya Art Projects on JANUARY 8 and 9. The OPEN STUDIO SESSIONS invites the public to be part of the creative process as the methods of the performance of composition and electronic music and the radio transmissions shall be discussed, and where they can also interact with the artists. This will benefit people who are particularly interested in various issues in composition, improvisation, and performing electronic music in general.

BIOGRAPHIES:

Chris Brown, composer, pianist, and electronic musician, creates music for acoustic instruments with interactive electronics, for computer networks, and for improvising ensembles. Recent recordings of his music include "Boundary Layer", a 3-CD box set of new and old computer network music by The Hub, on Tzadik, "Cutter Heads ", duets with Fred Frith on Intakt, "Talking Drum", binaural recordings of interactive installations interleaved with environmental soundscapes on Sonore; and "Lava", for brass percussion and electronics on Tzadik. He is also known for his recorded performances of music by Henry Cowell, Luc Ferrari, Jose Maceda, David Rosenboom, Larry Ochs, Wadada Leo Smith, and John Zorn. He has also performed and recorded extensively with The Hub, Anthony Braxton, Pauline Oliveros, Fred Frith, Rova Saxophon Quartet, Ikue Mori, Alvin Curran, William Winant, Glenn Spearman Double Trio, among others. In 2005 he created TeleSon, a composition for two ReacTable instruments performed in a joint concert between Ars Electronic in Linz, Austria and the International Computer Music Conference in Barcelona, Spain. He teaches electronic music and composition at Mills College in Oakland, where he is Co-Director of the Center for Contemporary Music (CCM).

Tengal is a Manila-based interdisciplinary media artist, composer-musician, and filmmaker working with various mediums. He curates and organizes, as well as participates in various media art shows in the Philippines and abroad. His work puts the focus on direct experience, risk-taking and personal interaction between artists and audience, and emphasizes the situational potential of live performance, the interplay of various media – sound and image, in particular – and candid exchange between sub-cultural and academic initiatives. He founded SABAW Media Art Kitchen – a not-for-profit, artist-run initiative and network platform for all kinds of information and communication carried via modern electronic media focused specially in the region of South East Asia.

The Gangan Ensemble is loosely composed of improvisers on both sound and video. Having a mixture of electronic and acoustic musicians, live video performance artists or VJs also participate. The ensemble has had various permutations involving a variety of artists and musicians from the Philippines, Singapore, USA, Germany, Australia, UK, Slovenia, Malaysia, and Indonesia since 2007. The ensemble is flexible, having been composed from fifteen people down to three people; and has performed in various countries in South East Asia, notably in NCCA's Sinemusikalye in Manila and in the Cellsbutton Media Art Festival in Indonesia. It was founded by composer-improviser Tengal with video artist Tad Ermitano.

Caliph 8 is a beat smith, graffiti bomber and soothsayer. A lynch-pin of various groups and ensembles, he's probably the most sought after sound manipulator in the Philippines. His output extends to more than just sniffing aerosol paint and flexing wrists with fat markers–he also creates visuals and projects them while manipulating audio and creates sound collage.

Malek Lopez is a Berkeley-trained virtuoso who is the principal composer for the band Drip, and half of the abrasive electronica duo Rubber Inc, who are responsible for establishing electronica in Manila. He is also a well-noted film composer.

Inconnu ictu a.k.a Roger Llagas Lopez is a post-musician, experimental composer-improviser, multi-instrumentalist, visual art enthusiast who resides in the shoe capital of the Philippines. As a sound constructor he explores his interest by using obsolete electronic gadgets, pedal fx boxes, defective rhythm consoles, found objects, d.i.y microphones and circuit-bent electronics.

Blums Borres guitarist and media artist who experiments with sound, video, and animation. Formerly a technical director at Toei Animation Philippines, he has a BA in Multimedia Design from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. His work has been featured at the Australian Center Moving Images (ACMI), and in cinemas and television in Japan.

Lirio Salvador is a multi-media experimental artist and is probably the most influential and astonishing homemade circuit-benders and instrument builders in the country. He established the E.X.I.S.T. sound art collective back in 2002. He creates his assemblage of musical instruments using day to day materials that are found in his present environment, including bicycle gears, drain cleaning springs and stainless steel tubes.

Tad Ermitano is a media artist, writer and filmmaker. As far as the media art goes, he is interested in algorithmic/procedural editing and composition, new uses for the moving image and have been lately drifting into elementary robotics. His work "Quartet" was exhibited in the recently concluded International Symposium for Electronic Arts (ISEA) in Singapore.

Johanna Poethig is a visual, public and performance artist who has exhibited internationally and has been actively creating public art works, murals, paintings, sculpture and multimedia installations for over 20 years. She has worked in collaboration with other artists, architects, urban planners, design teams, arts commissions, specific communities and cultural groups. Poethig's public art works intervene in the urban landscape, in neighborhoods, on freeways, in parks, hospitals, schools, homeless shelters, cultural centers, advertising venues and public buildings. She has received numerous commissions and awards for this work. Her paintings, sculpture and installations reflect her interest in satire, symbol, human nature, society and our consumerist culture. She has produced and participated in performance events that mix feminism, global politics, costume, props, cabaret, experimental music and video.

Presenting two nights of handmade music that blur the lines between electro-acoustic, free improvisation, industrial, free jazz, performance art and freeform-noise, and will be paired with the intensity of live video performances (vjing), exquisite homemade machines, real guitars, absurd costumes, and even more live action on stage. FETE DE LA WASAQUE will be hosted by SABAW Media Art Kitchen in cooperation with Greenpapaya art projects and Mag:net Galleries.

Expect two nights of insanity going on and on till the break of dawn at Green Papaya art space and Mag:net cafe Katipunan - including one of the very extreme and rare performances from Australia's Justice Yeldham. Cavite's E.X.I.S.T. sound art collective will electrify our nerves thru their homemade electronics and circuit-bend gadgets, while Manila's New Media Arts Manila (N.M.A.M) will surely melt your brain with rapidfire audiovideo-shrapnel. Alongside the live video performances of N.M.A.M., performance and media artist Mannet Villariba and editor Edsel Abesamis will provide video assualt as well.

On the first night, Tengal's Gangan Series Project will manifest itself this time as the Gangan Trio featuring Tengal on no-input mixer, drums and objects, Blums Borres on guitar, Caliph8 on turntables, while Tad Ermitano takes off his vj hat and conducts the trio. Circuit-bender wiz Erick Calilan (Ugong) will challenge his old band mate from the now defunct Sound Existence, PJ Soliven (Nyabinghi), alongside the live script video programming of Mannet Villariba. Not to mention the avant-jazz/punk outfit, Radioactive Sago Project will perform improvised electro-acoustic "WASAK" music written and conducted by Francis de Veyra; while walls of industrial soundscapes of doom will break room walls with the heavy-hitters, Trojan Whores.

On the following night, Blums Borres will invite you to his all live, all improvised ambient solo guitar lounge. Tengal and Tad collaborate on an audio-visual "cooking show": Tengal stirs the complex and unstable nature of the sonic textures from the mixer, both live and processed - letting it boil and simmer; while Tad Ermitano who literaly "cooks up" non-newtonian fluid (i.e. ketchup, starch, suspensions, paint, blood and shampoo) into a "visual soup" using a loudspeaker, face-up, as a pot with cameras positioned on top of it. Elemento will drive some nerve-shattering noise with their intricately-crafted sonic machines, while analogue noise maker Inconnuictu will team up with ambient electronica ace Blend:er, and Ugong.

And finally Australia's leading audio artist and founder of the pioneering Australian record label Dual Plover, Lucas Abela (Justice Yeldham), will kill off whatever brain cells you have left on both nights!

SABAW ends the year with a wall shaking acoustic-meets-digital assault stirring acts on two nights of positive madness.

PERFORMERS

Lucas Abela aka JUSTICE YELDHAM has been performing for well over 15 years and is one of the leaders of Australian "noise music".
His early performances were crazed extensions of turntablism. Instead of turntables he'd use motors turning metal discs at 2000 rpm, and instead of record needles he'd use skewers or knives. He once used a glove that he had imbedded with record needles - Freddy Krueger style.
Incorporating everything from electro-acoustic trampolines, amplified samurai swords to high powered turntables constructed from sewing machine motors into his performances, in recent years he's been using sheets of glass that he blows through, screams through, bites and breaks.
Lucas has toured over 30 countries with this new act, appeared on numerous television shows, and even crashed a John Peel session at the BBC.

BLEND:ER is an electronic music creator and a noise enthusiast who lives in Cavite, Philippines. He started experimenting with audio acrobatics and technoid sonic landscapes in 1999. Being included in various album anthologies like Mood Swing Theater Volume 1 (2004) released by Kittenwhip Compilation and S.A.B.A.W. Anthology of Noise, Electronic, and Experimental Music (2004), Blend:er aka (Cris Garcimo) has often collaborated with E.X.I.S.T., SABAW and Electronica Manila artists.

BLUMS BORRES guitarist and media artist who experiments with sound, video, and animation. Formerly a technical director at Toei Animation Philippines, he has a BA in Multimedia Design from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. His work has been featured at the Australian Center Moving Images (ACMI), and in cinemas and television in Japan. His career in post production spans over 14 years and has involved himself in both professional productions and education. He currently teaches 3d animation at DLSU-CSB.

CALIPH8 is a beat smith, graffiti bomber and soothsayer. A lynch-pin of various groups and ensembles, he's probably the most sought after sound manipulator in the Philippines. A graduate of the U.P. College of Fine Arts, his output extends to more than just sniffing aerosol paint and flexing wrists with fat markers--he also creates visuals and projects them while manipulating audio and creates sound collage.
He is a member of A.M.P.O.N. hiphop collective, electronica group Drip, and was part of Downearf, a trueschool hiphop trio back in 1997.

EDSEL ABESAMES is a video editor / motion graphics person / director / racketeer / guitarist / poser / anime fan / overweight 32 year old / discontent drunkard. That about sums it up.

ELEMENTO is the brainchild of experimental multi-media artist Lirio Salvador, and has created a number of experimental electronic instruments based on his own concept of ethno-industrial art/music. Probably the most influential and astonishing homemade circuit-benders and instrument builders in the country, he established the E.X.I.S.T. sound art collective back in 2002. He creates his assemblage of musical instruments using day to day materials that are found in his present environment, including bicycle gears, drain cleaning springs and stainless steel tubes.

INCONNU ICTU a.k.a Roger Llagas Lopez is a post-musician, experimental composer-improviser, multi-instrumentalist, visual art enthusiast who resides in the shoe capital of the Philippines. "Inconnu Ictu(s)" means an "unknown man's blow or a stroke", as a sound constructor he explores his interest by using obsolete electronic gadgets, pedal fx boxes, defective rhythm consoles, found objects, d.i.y microphones and circuit-bent electronics.

MANNET VILLARIBA is a performance artist, painter, sound artist, visual programmer and designer. He has been active in diverse fields of art and design - including research and development. Yielding the outputs of sounds, images, and light through analyzing and transforming the numerical values gained from various sensors and input devices, he is a visual artist pursuing sensual peculiarity and interaction.

NYABINGHI (PJ Soliven) and UGONG (Erick Calilan) used to perform together as a duo called Sound Existence back in 2005. They are active leaders and members of E.X.I.S.T., taking part in producing shows, worshops, exhibitions both in Cavite and Manila. While Nyabinghi utilizes mainly a laptop as an instrument, UGONG performs using home-made "cracked" electronics that are circuit-bent and rewired to make electronic squeels, blips, hisses, and clicks.

RADIOACTIVE SAGO PROJECT is probably the country's most successful avant bands that crossed over to mainstream music, having released 3 successful albums and have been radio darlings 'til this day. Instead of playing their usual popular hits, they will perform an experimental electro-acoustic piece by Francis de Veyra, the group's main composer. Francis studied atonal and modern composition in the conservatory of music in the University of the Philippines where he was almost sued and banned from the university for his infamous recital piece called "Wasakan".
"TACSIYAPO", is a new piece which will premiere on the 14th. The composer explains: "TACSIYAPO is an expression in kapampangan [a local dialect] meant and used to vent out anger and frustration. The piece was inspired by an interesting phenomena in a restaurant in Tarlac where they have people throw anything in a wall be it cups, plates, cats, or even TVs. Upon throwing them on the wall (that is painted with vandals of the words that are 'cancers' of our society), they shout 'Tacsiyapo!'. This piece tries to 'throw' an array of sounds and textures, wherein the performers will try to vent out their angst, not physically, but thru sound. The group will use electronic music, spoken word, bass and electric guitars, kaoss pads, percussions and the audience."

TAD ERMITANO is a media artist, writer and filmmaker. As far as the media art goes, he is interested in algorithmic/procedural editing and composition, new uses for the moving image and have been lately drifting into elementary robotics. His work "Quartet" was exhibited in the recently concluded International Symposium for Electronic Arts (ISEA) in Singapore.

TENGAL is a Manila-based interdisciplinary media artist, composer-musician, media art impresario, and filmmaker. He curates and organizes media art projects, has collaborated with various artists, and has performed in various shows in the Philippines and abroad. He attended the Berlinale Talent Campus 2006, in Berlin, Germany; the 5th Asia-Europe Foundation Art Camp: Re-Vision Bangkok | New Media Art and Interactivity, in Thailand; and most recently at Cellsbutton II: Yogyakarta International Media Art Festival, in Indonesia. He founded SABAW in 2005.

TROJAN WHORES is composed of Pow Martinez, Sam Kiyoumarsi, and Thomas Mcwalter, and they create harsh industrial soundscapes with doom metal elements.
