What does a museum sound like?

Apart from the gustatory and olfactory, the aural sense is possibly the least serviced among all the human sensory channels through which we experience what gets shown in museums and other spaces tending to human sensation. And so it was in keeping with the idea of venturing forth into mostly untrodden paths that Lopez Museum presents Reverb, a group exhibition on sound and the broad auditory spectrum as it opens to the public September 12, 2011. Reverb is the museum’s onsite offering for the Zero In museum consortium’s Open Call Festival which runs from September 15-24, 2011 at the SM Mall of Asia Atrium.

Reverb takes off from notions having to do with resonance, registration, and audible impressions. It brings together sound-based work from artists such as Eric Ambata, Kawayan de Guia, Tad Ermitaño, IC Jaucian, Diokno Pasilan, Ronald Tomas, the collaborative, E.X.I.S.T. (Experimentation in Sound Art Tradition), and UP College of Music ethnomusicologist Dr. Christine Muyco. In responding to Lopez Museum’s open call for sound-based proposals last year, these artists will be showing an amalgam of old and new works drawn up from the ambient and self-produced, the installative and site-specific, the found and the overlooked, alongside objects from the museum collection that invoke hearing and an overall sharpening of the experiential aspect of encountering art.

Reverb’s off-site component at the SM MOA Atrium will encourage mallers to physically engage with everyday objects such as air mattresses, and surrounding foliage. Live performances from these invited artists will make up both Reverb’s onsite and off-site complements which are also intended to emphasize the temporal and intangible nature of sound art.

ABOUT:

World Listening Day is an annual global call to celebrate the practice of listening and field recording by means of participating or organizing of any of these activities:

• organize a soundwalk or a listening party when people play field recordings
• organize a performance event that involves field recordings and other artistic expressions that explore our soundscape and how we can listen to our sonic environment
• participate in a private / solitary way, by paying attention to your soundscape
• facilitate an educational event that relates to acoustic ecology, field recordings, or a similar topic
• contact organizations that are participating in World Listening Day, to see if you can get involved that way

July 18 was chosen as the official date for World Listening Day (but not limited to this date only) because it is the birthday of the Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer, who is one of the founders of the Acoustic Ecology movement -- soundscape studies that “find solutions for an ecologically balanced soundscape where the relationship between the human community and its sonic environment is in harmony” (World Soundscape Project).

World Listening Day is co-organized by the World Listening Project (WLP), a not-for-profit organization devoted to understanding the world and its natural environment, societies and cultures through the practices of listening and field recording; and Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE), a membership organization dedicated to exploring the role of sound in natural habitats and human societies, and promoting public dialogue concerning the identification, preservation, and restoration of natural and cultural sound environments.

In response to the open call, E.X.I.S.T. (EXperimentation In Sound art Tradition) will be participating this year’s World Listening Day by organizing a performance event that will feature selected artists whose work marks an important creative application on the practice of Field Recording and Phonography. It will consist of live performances of field recording materials and an informal presentation about Acoustic Ecology. Also, with the purpose of establishing an exchange of ideas, the event will be open to informative and meaningful discussion.

The event would be purposely held in an open-air venue to aesthetically/conceptually blend the performances with the outdoor environment. Although July 18 is the official date of World Listening Day, the event (Cavite, Philippines) would be set on Sunday, July 17.

Charlie Morales - is a live sound engineer and technician with years of experience in live sound mixing. He is an associate member of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration and has attended trainings and workshops on Audio Engineering, Live Sound Reinforcement and Sound Fusion from Audiophile Philippines, Audio Solutions, Inc., Yupangco Electornics, PMX Audio, among others.

Gerard ‘Dok’ Natividad – is the founder of Lakbay Lahi (a World Beat group from Cavite). He is an Academic Service Faculty under Environmental Resource Management & Campus Development Office of DLSU-Dasmariñas, and currently working on an independent research in the field of Acoustic Ecology.

Samuel Andre (France)* - is a sound and video artist who trained in Mathematics, Cognitive Sciences and musical interface research. He developed a project around the sound under the name of ieva and started to compose music like imaginary journey or short stories. Since 2 years ago he started to practice improvisation multicast using multi layered field recordings that are overlayed creating an intense and emotionally universe that you pass through as a waking dream, like a cinema for ear. He also directed several experimental films. After an initial approach, abstract and sensitive, playing on the body of the digital image (pixelization, compression). EXperimentation In Sound art Tradition (E.X.I.S.T.) and Espasyo Siningdikato creatiVEnue present ReSound; featuring MNTXX, Ugong and Distinguished Over-rated Radical Kids. ReSound is an underground platform for experimental, electronic, sound art, avant-garde, improvisation, noise, obscure, or in-between adventure in music.

Participating Artists:

MNTXX (pronounced "mo-no-tax") is the duo of college mates and alter egos, Momo and Takz. When Momo met Gee-Bee and Takz met Kay-Ess, they all went on a quadruple date with Andy Warhol, scored some A to Z's with Sid Vicious and jammed with Malcom McLaren till the cows got lost on their ways home.

Erick Calilan is a Cavite-based sound artist, a multi-instrumentalist and an interdisciplinary artist working with D.I.Y. (Do-It-Yourself) technology related to sounds. Often performs under the name UGONG, a sound art outfit utilizing home-made circuit-bent sound devices created from toy keyboards, walkie-talkie and other low voltage electronic devices, he has collaborated with numbers of sound artists, media-art practitioner, musicians and performance artists in the Philippines. He spearheads the sound art collective, Experimentation in Sound Art Tradition (E.X.I.S.T.), and recently curated the festival called Active | De-Active: An Inventive Music Festival 2010, an international music festival focused on improvised music, which toured three Philippine cities – Cavite, Manila and Davao.

DISTINGUISHED OVER-RATED RADICAL KIDS is a solo project by Eric Diolola, for this edition of ReSound he will be collaborating with a local Hip-hop artist.

Since its inception in 2008 as Fete dela Wasaque, the festival had a particular focus around performances within the field of sonic arts and innovative music. For this year’s edition, we have decided to rename the festival WSK!—as three cryptic letters, which can only provide as much as the sum of the parts. We decided to widen the focus on “parallel voices” that throughout history have worked alongside the sonic arts. Theater, dance, poetry, cinema, television, radio, and even religious and spiritual purposes have integrated the use of sound in almost every process. However, the sound world is a bit hermetic. It happens, then it’s done. It doesn’t have the same library of information that you have in the other arts. So we hope, among other things, WSK! would be a chance to explode people’s misconceptions about what contemporary music is.

The path of music evolution is never straight, god forbid. Curveballs, odd combinations, and juxtapositions feed the rich variability of production, fuel the creativity of producers, and aggravate and agitate listeners toward new territory. Artists cross-pollinate and fertilize, expanding their reach and deepening their productions with the increased richness that comes with drawing new and unexpected connections. Get carried away by a program that straddles between live video manipulation (live cinema) against a backdrop of powerful club and textured home listening; connects experimental and pop, electro and rock, classic and futuristic; exploits contrast; digs up unexpected links; and builds spontaneous bridges into the unforeseen.

In short, this year’s festival consists of live performances, an exhibition, and a digital album + book anthology of mission statements, buckshot manifestos, postmortems, essay fragments and short interviews documenting the vicissitudes of sonic life off the radar in Manila, Asia and beyond.

Active | De-Active 2010 kicks off this Saturday (October 9) in Espasyo Siningdikato creatiVEnue to showcase two exciting frontiers of music which are experimental and improvised music. The festival called Active | De-Active: An Inventive Music Festival 2010, is an international music festival, which will tour three Philippine cities – Cavite, Manila and Davao – from October 9 – 16.

The festival will consist of a series of live performances, workshops, presentation of methods and practices, creative collaborations and artist-talks by international and local participating artists, in an effort to present and exchange artistic ideas and musical experiences that will contribute to the appreciation and understanding of these developments in music.

The festival is also an attempt to gather a community of experimental musicians, improvisers, new media art practitioners, musicologists, and teachers who can share and exchange knowledge that would benefit the understanding of improvised and experimental music.

The Cavite Leg will happen in Espasyo Siningdikato creatiVEnue, an independent art space located at Block 11 Lot 9 Congressional Road, Bgy. Sta.Fe Dasmariñas, Cavite (near DLSU-Dasmariñas, in front of Dan Phil Hardware), on October 9 (Saturday).

Sabu Toyozumi (Japan) - A drummer of the first generation of free jazz scene in Japan. Born in Yokohama, 1943. In 1970s, he formed a trio with famous bass player Yoshizawa Motoharu and sax player Takagi Mototeru and recorded his first album with the New Direction led by guitarist Takayanagi Masayuki. After that , he collaborated with many outstanding improvisation musicians, such as Kaoru Abe, Derek Bailey, Peter Brötzmann, Han Bennink, and Takehisa Kosugi. Toshiyuki Seido (Japan) - has been a sound artist for more than 20 years and has performed in various local and international exhibits and shows, most recently in Kaida Gallery, Manila with fellow sound artist and collaborator Lirio Salvador to release their multi-media work (also in collaboration with visual artist and sculptor Noell El Farol and photographer Koji Onaka) entitled "ManilaBox", a collection of sounds and images of Manila.

Elemento - is a multi-disciplinary art collective that is spear-headed by Lirio Salvador, a visual assemblage / sound artist. Salvador creates sound sculptures cum musical instruments out of metal pipes, stainless steel, bicycle parts and other industrial materials. These sound sculptures are being used by the group in their sound art/musical performances and are sometimes seen hanging on display on different museums and art galleries.

Blend:er - is an electronic music producer, analog synth player and field recordingsenthusiast from Cavite, Philippines His music has appeared in Mood Swing Theater Compilation (2004), Atlanta, U.S.A., S.A.B.A.W. Anthology (2006) – the first anthology of sound art, noise, electronic, and experimental music in the Philippines, and in Experimentation in Sound Art Tradition 3 CD Album (2009). Lakbay Lahi - is built on the philosophy that deep satisfaction from sound is something innate...inborn. For the span of 9 months that every human has spent inside the womb of their mother, they have, consciously or unconsciously, been listening to the music of LIFE - wiggling themselves inside the small confines of the placenta as the hearts of their loving mothers continuously beat. Creating a never ending solo concerto of a 'percussionist', stopping the performance would mean death to the 'musician' and/or the 'listener' as well.

Formed in 1999 in Cavite, Lakbay Lahi tries to bring about this innate feeling of oneness between man and music...between soul and sound. ‘Free-form' is practiced on every organic sound art piece. The basic melodies are used as a foundation, but there is always a level of uniqueness between performances. Emotional, psychological and spiritual status of the performers at the very moment of performance contributes to the color and texture of the organic sound art piece.

Charles Fournier (Davao) - Primarily a guitarist and a composer in the 90s Manila rock scene, Chuck Fournier explored electronic music before his move to Davao in 2004. He has won an award for his techno-tribal piece featuring synthesizers and traditional ethnic instruments, along with Manobo lyrics entitled "Life's Circle (Gahad To Ko-ontayan)" in the Tugtog World Music Festival in Davao City, sponsored by The Davao Tourism Authority. Active | De-Active is an international festival to be held in the Philippines that focuses on two exciting frontiers of music — experimental and improvised music. The event is scheduled to take place this coming October 9, 12, 13, 15 and 16 at various selected venues in Cavite, Manila and Davao.

This will provide a platform for informed discussions of the cultural, developmental and educational aspects of improvisation and experimentation in music, and at the same time to present the artistic or technical practices embodied in it. The festival is also an attempt to gather a community of experimental musicians, improvisers, new media art practitioners, musicologists, and teachers who can share and exchange knowledge that would benefit the understanding of improvised and experimental music.

BedroomLab functions as an informal art platform, wherein open discussions, brainstorming sessions, lectures, network meetings, performances, hands-on workshops, demonstrations and public gatherings take place.

The first edition (BedroomLab.01) tackled two local artists who focus on sound to talk about the gritty details of their works in electronic video and sound, then subsequently presented it via collaborative performance. On the second edition (BedroomLab.02), brainstorming sessions alongside open discussions with various artist communities in Manila and Cavite regarding not just the development and continuation of artistic sonic and visual art projects; but the "collaborative futures" of these communities.

SABAW Media Art Kitchen and Visual Pond present BedroomLab.03, ADE DARMAWAN of Ruangrupa. Ruangrupa is an artists' initiative established in 2000 by a group of artists in Jakarta, Indonesia. It is a not-for-profit organization that strives to support the progress of contemporary art ideas within the urban context and the broader scope of the culture by means of exhibitions, festivals, art labs, workshops, research, and journal publication.

For his talk, Darmawan will discuss the history, network and survival of artist initiatives in Indonesia, drawing from his experience in Ruangrupa and a recent exhibition he co-curated featuring twenty-one Indonesian artist initiatives and collectives. He will also talk about ruangrupa's ongoing Art Lab, a project designed for conducting research and creative collaborations on urban and media issues. It serves as a collaborative platform for individual artists as well as interdisciplinary groups from Indonesia and abroad, presenting in various formats such as exhibitions, events, publications, websites and interventions in public spaces. Under the umbrella of "Urban Mobility", two thematic Art Lab projects are presented each year for 2008-2010. Darmawan will talk about the past projects of 2008-2009 [2008: “Kendaraan (project on people's desire on Vehicles)” and “Desain Kota Dalam Kota (City Design in The City) ”; 2009 “Transaksi (Transaction)” and “Teknologi Virtual Komunikasi (Virtual Communication Technology)] and converse on this year's work in progress, “Kota lama (Old City)” (2010), and “Kota Masa Depan (Future City)”.

Darmawan will also talk about his own artistic projects, which look into ideas of industrial products and consumption and production mechanism, attempting to see the layers of reality and illusion that is generated by it. He is currently working on a project on the history of consumption, harking back to the colonial era.

Open discussions with the audience are highly encouraged, so please be prepared for some prolonged chit chat over food and beer. Drinks and finger food will be served.

Ade Darmawan

Darmawan was born in 1974 in Jakarta, Indonesia, then moved to Yogyakarta (central Java) for 5 years to study at Indonesia Art Institute of (I.S.I), in Graphic Art Department. A year after his first solo exhibition in 1997 at the Cemeti Contemporary Art Gallery, Yogyakarta (now Cemeti Art House), he stayed in Amsterdam for two years post-graduate residency program at the Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten (State Academy of Fine Art) - Institute for Advance Art Studies and Research - Amsterdam, Netherlands. Back from Amsterdam in 2000 and with five other artists from Jakarta, he founded ruangrupa - an artists' initiative space.

He has been actively working as visual artist with works ranging from objects, installations, digital prints and public art. As an artist and curator he has participated in many art projects and exhibitions in several cities in Indonesia and abroad, such as in Amsterdam, Seoul, New York, Buenos Aires, Durban, Tokyo, Bangkok, Mumbai, Mexico City, Istanbul, and Sydney.

From 2006-2009 he was a member of Jakarta Arts Council, and the artistic director of Jakarta Biennale XIII-ARENA 2009. Now he lives and works in Jakarta as an artist, teacher, and director of ruangrupa.

OF NOISE AND MEN

As it lit up at the backdrop of the stage, the dated, almost iconic, neon-blue sign read: Concert at the Park. “Oh my God! Ingay lang ‘to!” exclaimed a middle-aged man sitting at the bleachers of the ampitheater at Rizal Park. The man was reacting to an emcee’s introduction to the evening’s free musical presentation, where words like “electronica-punk,” “experimental,” and “edgy” were used. I asked myself, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

The program was underway and as it progressed, there was something noticeable on most of the people’s faces—befuddlement if not confusion, irritation if not outright anger. In hindsight, what unfolded was pretty much the intertwining of various mediums: theater, poetry, film, and, I guess, something that can be described as music. Honestly, I’m not too sure about what I heard. But for the rest of the audience, especially the children who covered their ears, the performance probably sounded a lot like, well, noise.
